Try Xicala. It’s been around awhile, occuping a closet-sized space between a dry cleaner and a giant construction site on Elizabeth Street. I live in the neighborhood and every time I walk by, am amazed not just by its staying power, but how jammed it can get, especially when they squeeze in a live band three nights a week.
They’ve got a pleasing little list of tapas- we tried the garlic shrimp, white bean stew, and sauteed mushrooms- that complements the tightly edited list of wines and some delicious sangria. It’s a perfect spot to go on the first date, the third date, or if you’re like me, with your girlfriends.
